- Authors: Christian Arenz and Herschel Rabitz
- Abstract summary: The ability to control quantum systems using shaped fields as well as to infer the states of such controlled systems from measurement data are key tasks in the design and operation of quantum devices.
We relate the ability to control and reconstruct the full state of the system to the absence of singular controls, and show that for sufficiently long evolution times singular controls rarely occur.
We describe a learning algorithm for finding optimal controls that makes use of measurement data obtained from partially accessing the system.

- Abstract: The ability to control quantum systems using shaped fields as well as to
infer the states of such controlled systems from measurement data are key tasks
in the design and operation of quantum devices. Here we associate the success
of performing both tasks to the structure of the underlying control landscape.
We relate the ability to control and reconstruct the full state of the system
to the absence of singular controls, and show that for sufficiently long
evolution times singular controls rarely occur. Based on these findings, we
describe a learning algorithm for finding optimal controls that makes use of
measurement data obtained from partially accessing the system. Open challenges
stemming from the concentration of measure phenomenon in high dimensional
systems are discussed.

We propose Code-as-Monitor (CaM) for both open-set reactive and proactive failure detection.
To enhance the accuracy and efficiency of monitoring, we introduce constraint elements that abstract constraint-related entities.
Experiments show that CaM achieves a 28.7% higher success rate and reduces execution time by 31.8% under severe disturbances.

Accurate control of quantum states is crucial for quantum computing and other quantum technologies.
We develop a machine-learning algorithm that uses a small amount of measurement data to construct a representation of the system's state.
We show that it achieves accurate control of unknown many-body quantum states and non-Gaussian continuous-variable states using data from a limited set of quantum measurements.

In robotics applications, smooth control signals are commonly preferred to reduce system wear and energy efficiency.
In this work, we aim to bridge this performance gap by growing discrete action spaces from coarse to fine control resolution.
Our work indicates that an adaptive control resolution in combination with value decomposition yields simple critic-only algorithms that yield surprisingly strong performance on continuous control tasks.
