- Abstract: Exact single photons cannot be generated on demand due to their infinite
tails. To quantify how close realizable optical states can be to some target
single photon in one dimension, we argue that there are two natural but
incompatible ways to specify the target state. Either it can be expressed as a
photon with a chosen positive-frequency spectrum, or it can be described as an
(unphysical) photon in a chosen positive-time pulse. The results show that for
sufficiently short target pulses, the closest realizable states contain
substantial multiphoton components. Upper and lower bounds for the maximum
fidelity are derived and are expressed as functions of the size of the target
state's tail, for negative time or negative frequency, respectively. We also
generalize the bounds to arbitrary photon-number states.

of the population inversion: transition to lasing in the class-B limit [62.997667081978825]
No class-B quantum density-matrix model is available to date, capable of accurately describing coherence and photon correlations within a unified theory.
Here we carry out a density-matrix theoretical approach for generic class-B lasers, and provide closed equations for the photonic and atomic reduced density matrix in the Fock basis of photons.
This model enables the study of few-photon bifurcations and non-classical photon correlations in class-B laser devices, also leveraging quantum descriptions of coherently coupled nanolaser arrays.

Modification of spontaneous decay in space and time is a central topic of quantum physics.
We study the resulting collective spontaneous emission patterns in entangled Dicke states.
Our results demonstrate that the detection of a single photon can profoundly modify the collective emission of an atomic array.

Single photons have infinite tails, and the question of causality becomes meaningless.
We solve this problem by introducing strictly localized states close to single photons.
These states can be arbitrarily close to single photons while demonstrating causality for their leading edge.

We create engineered quantum states of light with tunable photon statistics, including approximate weak coherent states.
