- Abstract: A $(2+1)$-dimensional gapped quantum many-body system can have a
topologically protected energy current at its edge. The magnitude of this
current is determined entirely by the temperature and the chiral central
charge, a quantity associated with the effective field theory of the edge. We
derive a formula for the chiral central charge that, akin to the topological
entanglement entropy, is completely determined by the many-body ground state
wave function in the bulk. According to our formula, nonzero chiral central
charge gives rise to a topological obstruction that prevents the ground state
wave function from being real-valued in any local product basis.

We study the finite-size scaling of the energy of non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with parity and time-reversal symmetry.
We find that under open boundary condition (OBC), the energy scaling $E(L)sim c/L$ reveals a negative central charge $c=-2$ at the non-Hermitian critical point.
The scaling function demonstrates distinct behaviors at topologically non-trivial and trivial sides of critical points.

A quantity regarded as a "higher" version of chiral central charge gives a further obstruction beyond $c_-$ to gapping out the edge.
We show that the higher central charge can be characterized by the expectation value of the textitpartial rotation operator acting on the wavefunction of the topologically ordered state.
This allows us to extract the higher central charge from a single wavefunction, which can be evaluated on a quantum computer.

We use a functional integral approach to evaluate the quantum interaction energy between two neutral atoms.
We show that the resulting expression for the energy becomes the Van der Waals interaction energy at the first non-trivial order.
We also explore the opposite, strong-coupling limit, which yields a result for the interaction energy as well as a threshold for the existence of a vacuum decay probability.

We study the linear response of the entanglement entropy of a simply connected region with respect to modular flow.
First, we apply it to (1+1)D conformal field theories and demonstrate its relationship to the chiral central charge.
Next, we apply it to (2+1)D gapped ground states where it reduces to a recently proposed formula.
