- Abstract: Open quantum systems are a subject of immense interest as their understanding
is crucial in the implementation of modern quantum technologies. In the study
of their dynamics, the role of the initial system-environment correlations is
commonly ignored. In this work, to gain insights into the role of these
correlations, we solve an exactly solvable model of a single two-level system
interacting with a spin environment, with the initial system state prepared by
a suitable unitary operation. By solving the dynamics exactly for arbitrary
system-environment coupling strength while taking into account the initial
system-environment correlations, we show that the effect of the initial
correlations is, in general, very significant and non-trivial. To further
highlight the importance of the initial system-environment correlations, we
also extend our study to investigate the dynamics of the entanglement between
two two-level systems interacting with a common spin environment.

This thesis presents studies performed on open quantum systems, that is, quantum systems interacting with their surrounding environment.
A common assumption is that the system and the environment are in separated initial states to begin with.
We show that the role played by initial correlations can be noticeable even if the SE coupling strength is kept smaller.

We propose Neural Interaction Inference with Potentials (NIIP) as an alternative approach to discover such interactions.
NIIP assigns low energy to the subset of trajectories which respect the relational constraints observed.
It allows trajectory manipulation, such as interchanging interaction types across separately trained models, as well as trajectory forecasting.

We show that, for any predetermined initial correlations, one can introduce a linear dynamical map on the space of operators of the open system.
We demonstrate that this construction leads to a linear, time-local quantum master equation with generalized Lindblad structure.

We study the time required to maximally entangle two principal systems interacting under the same energy constraints.
Direct interactions are proved to provide the fastest way to entangle the principal systems, but it turns out that there exist mediated dynamics that are just as fast.
The final message is that correlations save energy: one has to supply extra energy if maximal entanglement across the principal systems is to be obtained as fast as with an initially correlated mediator.

Modern dynamical systems are becoming increasingly non-linear and complex.
There is a need for a framework to model these systems in a compact and comprehensive representation for prediction and control.
Our approach learns these basis functions using a supervised learning approach.

We introduce a perturbative method that can be applied to any microscopic modeling of the system-environment interaction, including fully general initial correlations.
Our method is further illustrated by means of two cases study, for which it reproduces the expected dynamical behavior in the long-time regime more consistently than the standard projection technique.
