- Abstract: We introduce an algebraic structure for studying state-independent contextuality arguments, a key form of quantum non-classicality exemplified by the well-known Peres-Mermin magic square, and used as a source of quantum advantage. We introduce \emph{commutation groups} presented by generators and relations, and analyse them in terms of a string rewriting system. There is also a linear algebraic construction, a directed version of the Heisenberg group. We introduce \emph{contextual words} as a general form of contextuality witness. We characterise when contextual words can arise in commutation groups, and explicitly construct non-contextual value assignments in other cases. We give unitary representations of commutation groups as subgroups of generalized Pauli $n$-groups.

When the lattice is atomistic, it is isomorphic to the lattice of definably closed sets of a finitary relational structure in First Order Logic.
We show that the automorphism group must belong to a family of permutation groups known as geometric Jordan groups.
We then use the classification theorem for Jordan groups to argue that the combined requirements of probability and atomicism leave uncountably infinite Steiner 2-systems.

Contextuality can be understood as the impossibility to construct a globally consistent description of a model even if there is local agreement.
We can describe contextuality with the bundle approach, where the scenario is represented as a simplicial complex.
We introduce a hierarchy called n-contextuality to explore the dependence of contextual behavior of a model to the topology of the scenario.
