- Abstract: We propose a framework for understanding the information loss paradox in the context of canonical quantum gravity. We first revisit several approaches to black hole evaporation that do not involve an event horizon. In these models, we assume that each time slice corresponds to a coherent state in the gravitational phase space. Due to this property, the quantum state associated with a given spatial configuration will have a nonzero overlap with another spatial configuration. We show how this property can account for both semi-classical dynamics and unitary time evolution. We introduce an explicit toy model that follows semi-classical time evolution at the coarse-grained level; in addition, its time evolution is unitary at the fine-grained level. The only price that one must pay is the violation of the entropy bound; we discuss reasons why this may be justifiable.

In the standard paradigm the inhomogeneities observed in the CMB arise from quantum fluctuations of an initially homogeneous and isotropic vacuum state.<n>We propose an alternative paradigm in which such inhomogeneities are present from the very beginning.<n>Specifically, inhomogeneities in the quantum state at the Planck scale propagate into semiclassical inhomogeneities on CMB scales.

We review two approaches to the definition of the Hilbert space and evolution in mechanical theories with local time-reparametrization invariance.
We discuss in which sense both approaches exhibit an inner product that is gauge-fixed via an operator version of the usual Faddeev-Popov procedure.
We note that a conditional probability interpretation of the physical states is possible, so that both formalisms are examples of quantum mechanics with a relational dynamics.

The mass of the universe is a distribution of non-zero values of gravitational constraints.
A formulation of the Euclidean quantum theory of gravity is also proposed to determine the initial state.
Being unrelated to ordinary matter, the distribution of its own mass affects the geometry of space.

Black hole complementarity is inevitably linked to holography and states that information associated with the collapsed pure state is reflected in the near horizon region.
We argue that the information preserving quantum atmosphere of the black hole emerges from hidden variables on its horizon.
In AdS/CFT, this would mean that the completion of the semiclassical subalgebra to the complete boundary algebra has to be traced back to the emergent near horizon space structure.
