- Abstract: The remarkable phenomenon of catalyst tells us that adding a catalyst could
help state transformation. In this paper, we consider the problem of
catalyst-assisted probabilistic coherence distillation for mixed states under
strictly incoherent operations. To this end, we first present the necessary and
sufficient conditions for distilling a target pure coherent state from an
initial mixed state via stochastic strictly incoherent operations and the
maximal probability of obtaining the target pure state from the initial state.
With the help of these results, we present the necessary and sufficient
conditions for the existence of a catalyst that increases the maximal
transformation probability.

We show how well one can prepare good coherent states from low coherent states and whether a given coherent state is convertible to another one.
For a variant of coherence where one aims to prepare desired states in local subsystems, the rate of transformation becomes unbounded regardless of how weak the initial coherence is.
Applying this to the standard setting, we find that a catalyst can increase the coherence rate significantly -- from zero to infinite rate.

We show that using an entangled catalyst cannot enhance the singlet distillation rate of a distillable quantum state.
Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the capabilities and limitations of both catalytic and state transformations of entangled states.

We study the problem of state transformations in the framework of Gaussian thermal resource theory in the presence of catalysts.
We show that strong catalysts are useless for the single mode case, in that they do not expand the set of states reachable from a given initial state.
We derive necessary conditions for transformations holding for any number of modes, for strong catalysts and approximate transformations, and for weak catalysts with and without a thermal bath.

Entanglement entropy is the von Neumann entropy of quantum entanglement of pure states.
The relation between entanglement entropy and entanglement distillation has been known only for the setting, and the meaning of entanglement entropy in the single-copy regime has so far remained open.
Our results imply that entanglement entropy quantifies the amount of entanglement available in a bipartite pure state to be used for quantum information processing, giving results an operational meaning also in entangled single-copy setup.

We analytically obtain the maximum probability of converting a finite number of copies of an arbitrary two-qubit pure state to a single copy of a maximally entangled two-qubit pure state.
We show that the optimal catalyst for this transformation is always more entangled than the initial state but any two-qubit state can act as a (non-optimal) catalyst.

A correlated catalyst is a finite-dimensional auxiliary, which exactly preserves its reduced state while allowed to become correlated to the quantum system.
We show that the power of a catalyst increases with its dimension, and further, with a large enough catalyst, a qubit state with arbitrarily small amount of asymmetry can be converted to any mixed qubit state.
Our results may also apply to the constraints on coherence evolution in quantum thermodynamics, and to the distribution of timing information between quantum clocks.
