- Abstract: In a ceteris-paribus semantics for deontic logic, a state of affairs where a
larger set of prescriptions is respected is preferable to a state of affairs
where some of them are violated. Conditional preference nets (CP-nets) are a
compact formalism to express and analyse ceteris paribus preferences, which
nice computational properties. This paper shows how deontic concepts can be
captured through conditional preference models. A restricted deontic logic will
be defined, and mapped into conditional preference nets. We shall also show how
to model contrary to duties obligations in CP-nets and how to capture in this
formalism the distinction between strong and weak permission.

Tokenization is a critical step in the NLP pipeline.
Despite its recognized importance as a standard representation method in NLP, the theoretical underpinnings of tokenization are not yet fully understood.
The present paper contributes to addressing this theoretical gap by proposing a unified formal framework for representing and analyzing tokenizer models.

Domains: Transparency Is Necessary but Insufficient for Comprehensibility [25.542848590851758]
Ante-hoc interpretability has become the holy grail of explainable artificial intelligence for high-stakes domains such as healthcare.
It can refer to predictive models whose structure adheres to domain-specific constraints, or ones that are inherently transparent.
We unpack this concept to better understand what is needed for its safe adoption across high-stakes domains.

We introduce the methodology of Faithfulness-through-Counterfactuals.
It generates a counterfactual hypothesis based on the logical predicates expressed in the explanation.
It then evaluates if the model's prediction on the counterfactual is consistent with that expressed logic.

In interpretable NLP, we require faithful rationales that reflect the model's decision-making process for an explained instance.
We demonstrate that pipelines, existing models for faithful extractive rationalization on information-extraction style tasks, do not extend as reliably to "reasoning" tasks requiring free-text rationales.
We turn to models that jointly predict and rationalize, a class of widely used high-performance models for free-text rationalization whose faithfulness is not yet established.

We describe preferential Description Logics of typicality, a nonmonotonic extension of standard Description Logics by means of a typicality operator T.
This extension is based on a minimal model semantics corresponding to a notion of rational closure.
We consider other strengthening of the rational closure semantics and construction to avoid the so-called blocking of property inheritance problem.
