- Abstract: In cryptocurrencies, transaction fees are typically exclusively paid in the
native platform currency. This restriction causes a wide range of challenges,
such as deteriorated user experience, mandatory rent payments by decentralized
applications, and blockchain community rivalries (e.g., coinism). Ideally, in a
truly permissionless blockchain, transaction fees should be payable in any
other cryptocurrency via so-called metatransactions. In this paper, we
formalize metatransactions, review existing ideas, and describe novel
metatransaction design approaches. Under the assumption of sufficient market
liquidity, we argue that metatransactions do not lower the security of
cryptocurrency platforms. However, without changing the underlying blockchain,
metatransaction designs typically increase transaction costs and reduce the
blockchain transaction throughput.

We study the interplay between threshold cryptography and a class of blockchains that use Byzantine-fault tolerant (BFT) consensus protocols.
Existing approaches for threshold cryptosystems introduce a latency overhead of at least one message delay for running the threshold cryptographic protocol.
We propose a mechanism to eliminate this overhead for blockchain-native threshold cryptosystems with tight thresholds.

We propose a cryptocurrency exchange that restores user anonymity for the first time.
Since the platform knows highly sensitive user private information such as passport number, bank information etc, linking all (on-chain) transactions raises a serious privacy concern.
We also ensure that the user cannot double spend, and the user has to properly report accumulated profit for tax purposes, even in the private setting.

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) has grown rapidly in value in recent years.
The global DeFi ecosystem is fragmented into multiple blockchains, fueling the demand for cross-chain commerce.
Existing approaches for cross-chain transactions, e.g., bridges and cross-chain deals, achieve atomicity by locking assets in escrow.
We present CroCoDai to address these challenges.

A proof of work (PoW) is an important cryptographic construct enabling a party to convince others that they invested some effort in solving a computational task.
In this work, we examine the hardness of finding such chain of PoWs against quantum strategies.
We prove that the chain of PoWs problem reduces to a problem we call multi-solution Bernoulli search, for which we establish its quantum query complexity.
