- Abstract: In this paper we introduce Reddit legends, a collection of venerated old
posts that have become famous on Reddit. To establish the utility of Reddit
legends for both computational science/HCI and folkloristics, we investigate
two main questions: (1) whether they can be considered folklore, i.e. if they
have consistent form, cultural significance, and undergo spontaneous
transmission, and (2) whether they can be studied in a systematic manner.
Through several subtasks, including the creation of a typology, an analysis of
references to Reddit legends, and an examination of some of the textual
characteristics of referencing behaviour, we show that Reddit legends can
indeed be considered as folklore and that they are amendable to systematic
text-based approaches. We discuss how these results will enable future analyses
of folklore on Reddit, including tracking subreddit-wide and individual-user
behaviour, and the relationship of this behaviour to other cultural markers.

We explore the concept of folklore within software engineering, drawing from folklore studies to define and characterize narratives, myths, rituals, humor, and informal knowledge that circulate within software development communities.<n>We conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 industrial practitioners in Sweden to explore how such narratives are recognized or transmitted within their daily work and how they affect it.<n>We argue that making the concept of software engineering folklore explicit provides a foundation for subsequent ethnography and folklore studies and for reflective practice that can preserve context-effective exemplars while challenging unhelpful folklore.

We study how values are communicated in fairy tales from Portugal, Italy and Germany using a technique called word embedding with a compass.
We specify a list of value-charged tokens, consider their word stems and analyse the distance between these in a bespoke pre-trained Word2Vec model.
Preliminary findings hint at a shared cultural understanding and the expression of values such as Benevolence, Conformity, and Universalism across the studied cultures.

Chains of Children's Fairy Tales [46.65377334112404]
Social biases and stereotypes are embedded in our culture in part through their presence in our stories.
We propose a computational pipeline that automatically extracts a story's temporal narrative verb-based event chain for each of its characters.
We also present a verb-based event annotation scheme that can facilitate bias analysis by including categories such as those that align with traditional stereotypes.

We find that the number of male characters is two times that of female characters, showing a disproportionate gender representation.
Female characters turn out more associated with care-, loyalty- and sanctity- related moral words, while male characters are more associated with fairness- and authority- related moral words.

Genres can be understood in many different ways.
They are often perceived as a primarily sociological construction, or, alternatively, as a stylostatistically observable objective characteristic of texts.
This investigation discusses knowledge sources for studying genre variation and change by observing reader and author behaviour rather than performing analyses on the information objects themselves.
