- Abstract summary: It is a commonly accepted creed that in typical situations the rate of entropy production is non-negative.
We show that this assertion is not entirely correct if a time-dependent, external perturbation is not compensated by a rapid enough decay of the response function.

- Abstract: It is a commonly accepted creed that in typical situations the rate of
entropy production is non-negative. We show that this assertion is not entirely
correct if a time-dependent, external perturbation is not compensated by a
rapid enough decay of the response function. This is demonstrated for three
variants of the Drude model to describe electrical conduction in noble metals,
namely the classical free electron gas, the Drude-Sommerfeld model, and the
Extended Drude-Sommerfeld model. The analysis is concluded with a discussion of
potential experimental verifications and ramifications of negative entropy
production rates.

Evanescent Waves [0.0]
We consider the Casimir pressure between two metallic plates and calculate the four contributions to it determined by the propagating and evanescent waves and by the transverse magnetic and transverse electric polarizations of the electromagnetic field.
It is shown that the total transverse magnetic contribution to the Casimir pressure due to both the propagating and evanescent waves and the transverse electric contribution due to only the propagating waves, computed by means of the Drude model, correlate well with the corresponding results obtained using the plasma model.

It has been recognized for some time that even for perfect conductors, the interaction Casimir entropy, due to quantum/thermal fluctuations, can be negative.
This result was not considered problematic because it was thought that the self-entropies of the bodies would cancel this negative interaction entropy, yielding a total entropy that was positive.
In this paper we re-examine these issues, using improved physical and mathematical techniques, partly based on the Abel-Plana formula, and present numerical results for arbitrary temperatures and couplings.
