- Abstract: In a Radio-Frequency linear ion trap, 1D ion chains are routinely generated
in laboratories around the world. They present a non-homogenous ion density
along the chain. The possibility of generating uniformly distributed ion chain,
where the distance between any adjacent ions is a constant, would open up new
type of experiments in the context of Quantum Information and in the study of
the Homogeneous Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

We demonstrate low-excitation transport and separation of two-ion crystals consisting of one beryllium and one calcium ion.
The full separation involves transport of the mixed-species chain, splitting each ion into separate potential wells, and then transport of each ion prior to detection.

The quasiparticle method has achieved a great success in solid state electronics and crystal lattice vibration.
A general recipe is put forward to map the classical solid state ion system together with the short-range ion-ion repulsion to a quasiparticle quantum system.
The derived ionic eigen-states and transport can naturally incorporate the concerted behavior.

We report on an emergent mechanism for pumping in a quantum gas coupled to an optical resonator.
Due to dissipation, the cavity field evolves between its two quadratures, each corresponding to a different centrosymmetric crystal configuration.
This self-oscillation results in a time-periodic potential analogous to that describing the transport of electrons in topological tight-binding models.

Transport, separation, and merging of trapped ion crystals are essential operations for most large-scale quantum computing architectures.
We develop a theoretical framework that describes the dynamics of ions in time-varying potentials with a motional squeeze operator.
We show that motional squeezing can prepare an ion wave packet to enable transfer from the ground state of one trapping potential to another.
