- Title: Unruh-DeWitt detector's response to a non-relativistic particle
- Authors: Qidong Xu
- Abstract summary: We show that the matter part oscillates with the interaction time duration and the oscillation period depends on the difference between the mass of the particle and the energy gap of the detector.
We compare the matter part contribution with the non-relativistic probability density of the particle and find that they provide qualitatively similar description of the particle.

- Abstract: Unruh-DeWitt (UDW) detector that couples locally to a quantum field is an
important tool for operationally studying field properties. Here, we study the
response of an inertial UDW detector to a non-relativistic particle state of a
massive scalar field and we find that the transition probability of the
detector splits into the vacuum contribution and the matter contribution. We
show that the matter part oscillates with the interaction time duration and the
oscillation period depends on the difference between the mass of the particle
and the energy gap of the detector; a strong resonance pattern for the
transition probability is found when such difference equals to zero. We compare
the matter part contribution with the non-relativistic probability density of
the particle and find that they provide qualitatively similar description of
the particle.

Quasiparticles are emergent excitations of matter that underlie much of our understanding of quantum many-body systems.
We take advantage of the clean setting of homogeneous quantum gases and fast radio-frequency control to manipulate Fermi polarons.
We measure the decay rate and the quasiparticle residue of the driven polaron from the Rabi oscillations between the two internal states.

We show that internal energy changes due to emission or absorption are relevant even in the lowest energy limit.
Our results imply that one cannot have a consistent model of the Unruh-DeWitt detector as a massive particle without including the mass-energy equivalence.

The entanglement harvesting protocol is an operational way to probe vacuum entanglement.
Using this protocol, it is demonstrated that while the transition probability of an individual atom is unaffected by the presence of a gravitational wave, the entanglement harvested by two atoms depends sensitively on the frequency of the gravitational wave.
This suggests that the entanglement signature left by a gravitational wave may be useful in characterizing its properties, and potentially useful in exploring the gravitational-wave memory effect and gravitational-wave induced decoherence.
