Maritime History Knowledge Graph
- Abstract summary: A knowledge graph can accelerate research by providing a single connected source of truth that humans and machines can query.
We convert four data sets from the historical maritime domain into a knowledge graph.
Our knowledge graph is available for maritime historians and other interested users to investigate the daily business of the Dutch East India Company.

- Abstract: Digital sources are more prevalent than ever but effectively using them can
be challenging. One core challenge is that digitized sources are often
distributed, thus forcing researchers to spend time collecting, interpreting,
and aligning different sources. A knowledge graph can accelerate research by
providing a single connected source of truth that humans and machines can
query. During two design-test cycles, we convert four data sets from the
historical maritime domain into a knowledge graph. The focus during these
cycles is on creating a sustainable and usable approach that can be adopted in
other linked data conversion efforts. Furthermore, our knowledge graph is
available for maritime historians and other interested users to investigate the
daily business of the Dutch East India Company through a unified portal.

Data-driven algorithms are studied in diverse domains to support critical decisions, directly impacting people's well-being.
A growing community of researchers has been investigating the equity of existing algorithms and proposing novel ones, advancing the understanding of risks and opportunities of automated decision-making for historically disadvantaged populations.
Progress in fair Machine Learning hinges on data, which can be appropriately used only if adequately documented.
Unfortunately, the algorithmic fairness community suffers from a collective data documentation debt caused by a lack of information on specific resources (opacity) and scatteredness of available information (sparsity)
