- Abstract summary: This paper describes how we defined the hybrid format for VLDB 2021 going through the key design decisions.
Our goal is to share this knowledge with fellow conference organizers who target a hybrid conference format as well, which is on its way to becoming the norm rather than the exception.

- Abstract: In 2020, while main database conferences one by one had to adopt a virtual
format as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we decided to hold VLDB
2021 in hybrid format. This paper describes how we defined the hybrid format
for VLDB 2021 going through the key design decisions. In addition, we list the
lessons learned from running such a conference. Our goal is to share this
knowledge with fellow conference organizers who target a hybrid conference
format as well, which is on its way to becoming the norm rather than the
exception. For readers who are more interested in the highlights rather than
details, a short version of this report appears in SIGMOD Record.

This CfP provides rules for the BabyLM Challenge 2024-2025.
The overarching goals of the challenge remain the same.
We replace the loose track with a paper track.
We relax the rules around pretraining data.
We introduce a multimodal vision-and-language track.

Constraints [112.79808969568253]
We study general sequential decision-making under two adaptivity constraints: rare policy switch and batch learning.
For the rare policy switch constraint, we provide an algorithm to achieve a $widetildemathcalO(sqrtK+K/B)$ regret with the number of batches.
For the batch learning constraint, we provide an algorithm that provides a $widetildemathcalO(sqrtK+K/B)$ regret with the number of batches.

We describe the approach that we employed to address the task of Entity Recognition over Wet Lab Protocols.
In the first phase, we experiment with various contextualised word embeddings and a BiLSTM-CRF model.
In the second phase, we create an ensemble composed of eleven BiLSTM-CRF models.
Our final submission achieved a micro F1-score of 0.8175 and 0.7757 for the partial and exact match of the entity spans.

Experience [4.104922436116807]
The emergence of the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic has forced academic conferences to be held entirely in a virtual manner.
Past conferences have revealed numerous challenges, from budget planning, to selecting the supporting virtual platforms.
We advocate a mirror program approach for academic conferences. More specifically, the conference program is executed in multiple parallel (mirrored) programs, so that each mirror program can fit a different time zone.
