- Abstract: Introduction of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in a Josephson junction (JJ) gives
rise to unusual Josephson effects. We investigate JJs based on a newly
discovered heterodimensional superlattice V$_5$S$_8$ with a special form of
SOC. The unique homointerface of our JJs enables elimination of extrinsic
effects due to interfaces and disorder. We observe asymmetric Fraunhofer
patterns with respect to both the perpendicular magnetic field and the current.
The asymmetry is influenced by an in-plane magnetic field. Analysis of the
pattern points to a nontrivial spatial distribution of the Josephson current
that is intrinsic to the SOC in V$_5$S$_8$.

We show that a Higgs phase in $d$ spatial dimensions is in a non-trivial $U(1)$ SPT class protected by a global $U(1)$ symmetry associated with the Higgs field.
The signature properties of superconductors -- Higgs phases for electromagnetism -- can be reproduced from this SPT response.
We also treat generalizations to partial-Higgs phases, including "2e" condensates in electronic superconductors.

Cooper pairs in superconducting electrodes of a Josephson junction (JJ) as an open system, coupled via Andreev scattering to external baths of electrons.
Disequilibrium between the baths generates the direct-current bias applied to the JJ.
We argue that this picture of the JJ as a quantum engine resolves open questions about the Josephson effect as an irreversible process and could open new perspectives in quantum thermodynamics and in the theory of dynamical systems.

We present experimental investigations of transport properties in the insulating phase of two-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays (JJAs)
The observed temperature dependence of resistance indicates that the JJAs do not show a sharp phase transition but exhibit a gradual crossover to the insulating phase.
We also show that, at very low temperatures, the $I$-$V$ characteristics continuously develop into the negative differential conductance caused by coherent single-Cooper-pair tunneling.
