- Abstract: Recent work on dissimilarity-based hierarchical clustering has led to the
introduction of global objective functions for this classical problem. Several
standard approaches, such as average linkage, as well as some new heuristics
have been shown to provide approximation guarantees. Here we introduce a broad
new class of objective functions which satisfy desirable properties studied in
prior work. Many common agglomerative and divisive clustering methods are shown
to be greedy algorithms for these objectives, which are inspired by related
concepts in phylogenetics.

Multi-task learning (MTL) is a powerful machine learning paradigm designed to leverage shared knowledge across tasks to improve generalization and performance.
We propose an MTL approach at the intersection between task clustering and feature transformation based on a two-phase iterative aggregation of targets and features.
In both phases, a key aspect is to preserve the interpretability of the reduced targets and features through the aggregation with the mean, which is motivated by applications to Earth science.

A popular notion of fairness in clustering mandates the clusters to be em balanced, i.e., each level of a protected attribute must be approximately equally represented in each cluster.
In this article, we offer a novel model-based formulation of fair clustering, complementing the existing literature which is almost exclusively based on optimizing appropriate objective functions.
