- Abstract: The interference phenomenon of light is a common but most important effect in
physics. In this article, we compare and analyse the interference effects of
both coherent and incoherent light; in particular, the interference of
spatially incoherent light sources is described. Thermal light and a two-photon
entangled source may both be regarded as incoherent sources which can generate
similar second-order interference effects, but their underlying physics is
quite different. First-order interference can be realized with both spatially
coherent and incoherent sources in the same well-designed experimental setup,
but exhibit different interference patterns; their different interference
mechanisms will also be clarified.

We make a comprehensive study in both theory and experiment of a technique by homodyne measurement of field amplitudes to reveal interference.
This works for both classical and quantum fields even though there exists distinguishability in the interfering paths of light.
This technique is particularly useful for recovering interference in unbalanced interferometers with path-imbalance beyond coherence length of the input field.

We propose an interferometric setting through which N-particle interference can be observed, while any interference of lower orders is strictly suppressed.
We experimentally demonstrate this effect in a four-photon interferometer, where the interference is nonlocal, in principle.
A joint detection of all four photons identifies a high-visibility interference pattern varying as a function of their collective four-particle phase, a genuine four-body property.

emitters via two-photon excitation [49.1574468325115]
Two non-identical quantum emitters, when placed within a cavity and coherently excited at the two-photon resonance, can reach stationary states of nearly maximal entanglement.
We show that this mechanism is merely one among a complex family of phenomena that can generate both stationary and metastable entanglement when driving the emitters at the two-photon resonance.

Wave-particle duality ascribes mutually exclusive behaviors to quantum systems that cannot be observed simultaneously.
Here, we use quantum information-theoretic tools to derive quantifiers of two properties, which account for the combined influence of path probability and polarization.
The derived quantities can work as probes in the study of open quantum dynamics.

In classical optics, the visibility of interference, in a two-beam light interference, is related to the optical coherence of the two beams.
A wave-particle duality relation can be derived using this mutual coherence.
New definitions of interference visibility and path distinguishability have been introduced, which lead to a duality relation for multipath interference.
