- Abstract: In this paper, we address the nature of spacetime in quantum gravity in light
of a new version of the holographic principle that has established a
relationship between string theory and polymer holonomy structures similar to
Loop Quantum Cosmology spin networks. In front of the results found out, it is
possible to argue that, for such a relationship to work, spacetime must be seen
as emergent from a fundamental structure whose degrees of freedom correspond to
quantum correlations only.

We employ the consistent histories approach to quantum mechanics to define a fluctuation relation for this system.
As a result, thermodynamic entropy must be produced in the system due to its unavoidable interaction with the quantum fluctuations of spacetime.

We build an explicit quantum operator that can map states describing a quantum field on a superposition of spacetimes to states representing a quantum field with a superposition of masses on a Minkowski background.

We introduce an operational way to distinguish between the overall shift in the pulse wavepacket and its genuine deformation after propagation.
We then apply our technique to quantum states of photons that are coherent in the frequency degree of freedom.
We find that the quantum coherence initially present can enhance the deformation induced by propagation in a curved background.

We propose a formulation of quantum mechanics in an extended Fock space in which a tensor product structure is applied to time.
Subspaces of histories consistent with the dynamics of a particular theory are defined by a direct quantum generalization of the corresponding classical action.
The diagonalization of such quantum actions enables us to recover the predictions of conventional quantum mechanics and reveals an extended unitary equivalence between all physical theories.
