- Abstract: Quantum control of single x-ray photons can be achieved using thin-film nanostructure cavities with embedded layers of resonant nuclei. Here, we design and theoretically investigate tailored cavity structures that implement a non-Hermitian version of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger one-dimensional topological model. By tuning the geometry of the structure, different topological phases can be realized. We show that the presence of topological edge states can be identified in the reflectivity spectra of the thin-film cavities. Our findings pave the way for exploiting topological phases in x-ray quantum control.

Thin-film nanostructures with embedded M"ossbauer nuclei have been successfully used for x-ray quantum optical applications.
Here we address theoretically a new geometry, in which hard x-rays are coupled in forward incidence.
We show that it combines aspects of both nuclear forward scattering, visible as dynamical beating in the grazing-temporal response, and the resonance structure from grazing incidence, visible in the spectrum of guided modes.

Controlling the topological properties of quantum matter is a major goal of condensed matter physics.
We consider a prototypical model for topological phase transition, the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, coupled to a single mode cavity.
We show that depending on the lattice geometry and the strength of light-matter coupling one can either turn a trivial phase into a topological one or viceversa.

Quantum Hall systems are characterized by the quantization of the Hall conductance -- a bulk property rooted in the topological structure of the underlying quantum states.
Here, we realize a quantum Hall system using ultracold dysprosium atoms, in a two-dimensional geometry formed by one spatial dimension.
We demonstrate that the large number of magnetic sublevels leads to distinct bulk and edge behaviors.
