- Abstract: Attention-based multiple instance learning (MIL) has emerged as a powerful framework for whole slide image (WSI) diagnosis, leveraging attention to aggregate instance-level features into bag-level predictions. Despite this success, we find that such methods exhibit a new failure mode: unstable attention dynamics. Across four representative attention-based MIL methods and two public WSI datasets, we observe that attention distributions oscillate across epochs rather than converging to a consistent pattern, degrading performance. This instability adds to two previously reported challenges: overfitting and over-concentrated attention distribution. To simultaneously overcome these three limitations, we introduce attention-stabilized multiple instance learning (ASMIL), a novel unified framework. ASMIL uses an anchor model to stabilize attention, replaces softmax with a normalized sigmoid function in the anchor to prevent over-concentration, and applies token random dropping to mitigate overfitting. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ASMIL achieves up to a 6.49\% F1 score improvement over state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, integrating the anchor model and normalized sigmoid into existing attention-based MIL methods consistently boosts their performance, with F1 score gains up to 10.73\%. Classification [13.286360560353936]
Whole slide image (WSI) classification requires repetitive zoom-in and out for pathologists, as only small portions of the slide may be relevant to detecting cancer.
Due to the lack of patch-level labels, multiple instance learning (MIL) is a common practice for training a WSI classifier.
One of the challenges in MIL for WSIs is the weak supervision coming only from the slide-level labels, often resulting in severe overfitting.
Our approach augments the training dataset by sampling a subset of patches in the WSI without significantly altering the underlying semantics of the original slides.

We propose a novel Auto-weighted Noisy and Incomplete Multi-view Clustering framework (ANIMC) via a soft auto-weighted strategy and a doubly soft regular regression model.
ANIMC has three unique advantages: 1) it is a soft algorithm to adjust our framework in different scenarios, thereby improving its generalization ability; 2) it automatically learns a proper weight for each view, thereby reducing the influence of noises; and 3) it aligns the same instances in different views, thereby decreasing the impact of missing instances.
