- Abstract: For a long periodic chain of Bose condensates prepared in the free space, the subsequent evolution and interference dramatically depend on the difference between the phases of the adjacent and more distant condensates. If the phases are equal, the initial periodic density distribution reappears at later times, which is known as the Talbot effect. For randomly-related phases, we have found that a spatial order also appears in the interference, while the evolution of the fringes differs with the Talbot effect qualitatively. Even a small phase disorder is sufficient for qualitatively altering the interference, though maybe at long evolution times. This effect may be used for measuring the amount of coherence between adjacent condensates and the correlation length along the chain.

The method consists of a Ramsey sequence where both spin states of the Fermi gas are set in a superposition of a state at rest and a state with a large recoil velocity.
The off-diagonal long-range order is directly reflected in the behavior of the interferometric signal for long interrogation times.

Our results are compatible with a stable dissipative Luttinger-liquid phase that transitions to a long-range ordered superfluid.

In experiments, by coupling superconducting radio-frequency cavities via phase-tunable cables, we realize a factor of two improvement in the cavity photon lifetime.

We propose an experiment with a driven quantum gas coupled to a dissipative cavity that realizes a far-from-equilibrium phase transition between spatial and temporal order.

In both the atoms are subject to an accelerated transport, either via a uniform acceleration or via abrupt transitions to higher momentum states.
