- Abstract: Joseph Polchinski (1954-2018), one of the the leading theoretical physicists
of the past 50 years, was an exceptionally broad and deep thinker. He made
fundamental contributions to quantum field theory, advancing the role of the
renormalization group, and to cosmology, addressing the cosmological constant
problem. Polchinski's work on D-branes revolutionized string theory and led to
the discovery of a nonperturbative quantum theory of gravity. His recent,
incisive reformulation of the black hole information paradox presents us with a
profound challenge. Joe was deeply devoted to his family, a beloved colleague
and advisor, an excellent writer, and an accomplished athlete.

We make a conceptual overview of an approach to the initial-value problem in canonical gauge theories.
We stress how the first-class phase-space constraints may be relaxed if we interpret them as fixing the values of new degrees of freedom.

We present two alternative perspectives for the resolution of Hawking's information puzzle in black hole evaporation.
One of them is the central role played by the existence of the interior singularity that we expect to be replaced by a more fundamental quantum gravity formulation.
Both views rely on the notion that the standard effective quantum field theoretic perspective would require some deep modifications.

The broad debate on foundational issues in quantum mechanics took place at the 1957 Chapel Hill conference.
One of the most debated questions at Chapel Hill was whether the gravitational field had to be quantized.
The related problem of the wave function collapse, for which Feynman hints to decoherence as a possible solution, is discussed.
