- Abstract: We show that for any energy observable every extreme point of the set of
quantum states with bounded energy is a pure state. This allows us to write
every state with bounded energy in terms of a continuous convex combination of
pure states of bounded energy. Furthermore, we prove that any quantum state
with finite energy can be represented as a continuous convex combination of
pure states with the same energy. We discuss examples from quantum information
theory.

In infinite dimension states, given a state with energy bounded by E, we can write the state as a countable convex combination of pure states with energy bounded by E.
We conclude that for a Hamiltonian satisfying the Gibb's hypothesis such states cannot exist.

Superoscillations occur when a globally band-limited function locally oscillates faster than its highest Fourier coefficient.
Superenergy behavior implies that the state superoscillates in time with a rate given by the superenergy divided by the reduced Planck's constant.
This example demonstrates the possibility of mimicking a high-energy state with coherent superpositions of nearly zero-energy states for as wide a spatial region as desired.

We report on an additional bound that exists for states with a bounded energy spectrum.
This bound is dual to the Margolus-Levitin one in the sense that it depends on the difference between the state's mean energy and the energy of the highest occupied eigenstate.
Each of the three bounds can become the most restrictive one, depending on the spread and mean of the energy.
