- Abstract: We build and test a single-photon detector based on a Si avalanche photodiode
Excelitas 30902SH thermoelectrically cooled to -100 deg. C. Our detector has
dark count rate below 1 Hz, 500 um diameter photosensitive area, photon
detection efficiency around 50%, afterpulsing less than 0.35%, and timing
jitter under 1 ns. These characteristics make it suitable for long-distance
free-space quantum communication links, which we briefly discuss. We also
report an improved method that we call long-time afterpulsing analysis, used to
determine and visualise long trap lifetimes at different temperatures.

Single-photon terahertz (THz) detection is one of the most demanding technology for a variety of fields and could lead to many breakthroughs.
Here, we demonstrate, for the first time, the room temperature THz detector at single-photon levels based on nonlinear wave mixing in thermal Rydberg atomic vapor.

Our TED is able to reveal single-photons of frequency ranging from about 15 GHz to about 150 PHz depending on the chosen design and materials.

Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs) are typically used as single-mode-fiber-coupled single-pixel detectors.
Large area detectors are increasingly critical for applications ranging from microscopy to free-space quantum communications.
We explore changes in the rising edge of the readout pulse for large-area SNSPDs as a function of the bias current, optical spot size on the detector, and number of photons per pulse.
