- Abstract: Quantum fluctuations give rise to Casimir forces between two parallel
conducting plates, the magnitude of which increases monotonically as the
separation decreases. By introducing nanoscale gratings to the surfaces, recent
advances have opened opportunities for controlling the Casimir force in complex
geometries. Here, we measure the Casimir force between two rectangular gratings
in regimes not accessible before. Using an on-chip detection platform, we
achieve accurate alignment between the two gratings so that they interpenetrate
as the separation is reduced. Just before interpenetration occurs, the measured
Casimir force is found to have a geometry dependence that is much stronger than
previous experiments, with deviations from the proximity force approximation
reaching a factor of ~500. After the gratings interpenetrate each other, the
Casimir force becomes non-zero and independent of displacement. This work shows
that the presence of gratings can strongly modify the Casimir force to control
the interaction between nanomechanical components.

We explore systems involving moderately biased semiconductors that exhibit strong repulsive Casimir forces.
Modes emitted from the semiconductors exert a repulsive force on a near surface that overcomes the attractive equilibrium Casimir force contribution at submicron distances.
Our work opens up new possibilities of controlling forces at the nano- and micrometer scale with applications in sensing and actuation in nanotechnology.

We show that the confinement-induced nonlocality weakens the attraction of ultrathin slabs.
We give physical insight as to why such a pair of ultrathin slabs prefers to stick together in the perpendicularly oriented manner.

Casimir forces, related to London-van der Waals forces, arise if the spectrum of electromagnetic fluctuations is restricted by boundaries.
We experimentally investigate the influence of self-assembled molecular bio and organic thin films on the Casimir force between a plate and a sphere.
We find that molecular thin films, despite being a mere few nanometers thick, reduce the Casimir force by up to 14%.

A recently proposed experimental protocol for Quantum Gravity induced Entanglement of Masses (QGEM) requires in principle realizable, but still very ambitious, set of parameters in matter-wave interferometry.
Motivated by easing the experimental realization, we consider the parameter space allowed by a slightly modified experimental design.
Although this set-up will reintroduce a Casimir potential between the conducting plate and the masses, there are several advantages of this design.
