- Abstract: The skyrmion, which is characterised by a topological integer, is a structure
that is topologically stable against local disturbances. The huge potential of
skyrmions for use in magnetic storage systems has drawn considerable research
interest among physicists. Recently, the optical skyrmion was discovered and
has some excellent properties. However, these optical skyrmions have been
observed, for example, in surface plasmons that consist of evanescent waves.
This type of optical skyrmion is difficult to manipulate and also difficult to
apply in practice. In this work, we realise several skyrmionic optical
structures with different skyrmion numbers in a free-space linear optical
system. Because of the convenience of operation using free-space optics, with
the exception of the original applications of skyrmions, skyrmionic optical
structures can also be applied widely, e.g. to enable manipulation of tiny
objects or propagation over long distances.

Competing magnetic interactions may stabilize smooth magnetization textures that can be characterized by a topological winding number.
Such textures, which are spatially localized within a two-dimensional plane, are commonly known as skyrmions.
This Colloquium considers quantum effects associated with skyrmion textures: their theoretical origins, the experimental and material challenges associated with their detection, and the promise of exploiting them for quantum operations.

We show that by performing repetitive measurements on a quantum skyrmion, it can be completely stabilized through an analog of the quantum Zeno effect.

We show how simple structured light beams can be transformed into optical excitations of atoms with considerably more complex topologies.
This construction can also be described in terms of linked Hopf maps, analogous to knotted solitons of the Skyrme-Faddeev model.
While we prepare simpler two-dimensional baby-Skyrmions and singular defects using the traditional Stokes vectors on the Poincar'e sphere for light, particle-like topologies can only be achieved in the full optical hypersphere description.
