- Title: Anomalous Faraday effect in a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-symmetric
dielectric slab
- Authors: Vladimir Gasparian, Peng Guo and Esther J\'odar
- Abstract summary: We discuss a phase transition-like anomalous behavior of Faraday rotation angles in a simple parity-time symmetric model.
In anomalous phase, the value of one of Faraday rotation angles may turn negative, and both angles suffer spectral singularities and yield strong enhancement near singularities.

- Abstract: In this letter we discuss a phase transition-like anomalous behavior of
Faraday rotation angles in a simple parity-time ($\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$)
symmetric model with two complex $\delta$-potential placed at both boundaries
of a regular dielectric slab. In anomalous phase, the value of one of Faraday
rotation angles may turn negative, and both angles suffer spectral
singularities and yield strong enhancement near singularities.

It is found that besides the continuous $U(1)$ and discrete $mathbbZ$ symmetries, the system also exhibits two reflection symmetries $sigma_v$s, a central symmetry $C$ in the abstract position-momentum representation, and a discrete reflection-time symmetry

Similarities of two phenomena are discussed, both exhibit a phase transition-like anomalous behaviour in certain range of model parameters.
Anomalous behaviour of tunneling time and Faraday/Kerr angles in $mathcalPmathcalT$-symmetric systems is caused by the motion of poles of scattering amplitudes in energy/frequency complex plane.

Non-Hermitian, tight-binding $mathcalPT$-symmetric models are extensively studied in the literature.
Here, we investigate two forms of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians to study the $mathcalPT$-symmetry breaking thresholds and features of corresponding surfaces of exceptional points (EPs)
Taken together, our results provide a detailed understanding of detuned tight-binding models with a pair of gain-loss potentials.

The $mathcalPT$-symmetric array supports two $N$th-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase with real and imaginary eignvalues, respectively.
The anti-$mathcalPT$-symmetric array supports also two $N$th-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase, which refer however to imaginary and real eignvalues, respectively.

Here, we obtain the $mathcalPT$-threshold for a one-dimensional, finite Kitaev chain.
