- Title: Whence deep realism for Everettian quantum mechanics?
- Authors: Raoni W. Arroyo and Jonnas R. B. Arenhart
- Abstract summary: Shallow' and deep' versions of scientific realism may be distinguished as follows: the shallow realist is satisfied with belief in the existence of the posits of our best scientific theories.
By contrast, deep realists claim that realism can be legitimate only if such entities are described in metaphysical terms.

- Abstract: `Shallow' and `deep' versions of scientific realism may be distinguished as
follows: the shallow realist is satisfied with belief in the existence of the
posits of our best scientific theories; by contrast, deep realists claim that
realism can be legitimate only if such entities are described in metaphysical
terms. We argue that this methodological discussion can be fruitfully applied
in Everettian quantum mechanics, specifically on the debate concerning the
existence of worlds and the recent dispute between Everettian actualism and
quantum modal realism. After presenting what is involved in such dispute, we
point to a dilemma for realists: either we don't have the available
metaphysical tools to answer the deep realist's demands, and realism is not
justified in this case, or such demands of metaphysical dressing are not
mandatory for scientific realism, and deep versions of realism are not really
required.

We argue that a fictionalist approach to metaphysics is compatible with both the idea that the discipline inquires into the fundamental features of reality and naturalistic methodology.
We will claim that a fictionalist approach to metaphysics is compatible with both the idea that the discipline inquires into the fundamental features of reality and naturalistic methodology.

According to textiteffective realism, scientific theories give us knowledge about the unobservable world, but not at the fundamental level.
This view is justified by the well-received textiteffective-field-theory (EFT) approach to physics.
I explain the motivations for the EFT approach and effective realism and their benefits.

We argue that realism was never really at stake in the debate over scientific theory.
We argue that scientific realists believe that empirically adequate theories can be supplemented by interpretations that can mirror reality-as-it-is.

Hoare logic, and incorrectness (or reverse Hoare) logic are powerful techniques for static analysis of computer programs.
We show that any complete quantum abstract interpretation induces a quantum Hoare logic and a quantum incorrectness logic.

Resource theory of imaginarity has been introduced, allowing for a systematic study of complex numbers in quantum mechanics and quantum information theory.
We investigate imaginarity quantification, focusing on the geometric imaginarity and the robustness of imaginarity, and apply these tools to the state conversion problem in imaginarity theory.
Our study reveals the significance of complex numbers in quantum physics, and proves that imaginarity is a resource in optical experiments.

It is a widespread belief that results like G"odel's incompleteness theorems represent fundamental limitations to humanity's strive for scientific knowledge.
I argue that this view is wrong. It originates in a naive form of metaphysics that sees the physical and Platonic worlds as a collection of things with definite properties.
I argue to replace this perspective by a worldview in which a structural notion of real patterns', not things' are regarded as fundamental.
