- Abstract: We apply an extension of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle to derive
time-optimal controls of two-level quantum systems by means of piecewise
constant pulses. Global optimal solutions are obtained for state-to-state
transfer in the cases with one and two controls. Exact quantum speed limits are
established as a function of the sampling period. We observe numerically an
exponential convergence towards the minimum time in the continuous limit when
this period goes to zero. We show that this convergence is only polynomial for
a linearized quantum system. We discuss the experimental impact of this result.

A boundary time-crystal is a quantum many-body system whose dynamics is governed by the competition between coherent driving and collective dissipation.
We show that the best achievable sensitivity is proportional to $sqrtT N$, i.e., it follows the standard quantum limit in time and Heisenberg scaling in the particle number.
We demonstrate that the standard quantum limit can be surpassed by cascading two time-crystals, where the quantum trajectories of one time-crystal are used as input for the other one.

We exploit a coherent control in the Hamiltonian and an incoherent control in the dissipator which induces the time-dependent decoherence rates.

Two well-known quantum speed limits are the Mandelstam-Tamm and the Margolus-Levitin bounds.
Here, we test concurrently both limits in a multi-level system by following the motion of a single atom in an optical trap.
Our data reveal two different regimes: one where the Mandelstam-Tamm limit constrains the evolution at all times, and a second where a crossover to the Margolus-Levitin limit is manifested at longer times.
