- Abstract: We consider an open quantum system described by the GKLS equation and we are
interested in the onset of decoherence. We are in particulary interested in
situations where only some degrees of freedom of the system are coupled to the
environment, and we want to understand if, and how fast, the noise travels
through the system and eventually affects all degrees of freedom. We find that
this can be understood in terms of the H\"ormander condition, a condition on
the commutators of the Hamiltonian vectorfields of the Lindblad operators and
the internal Hamiltonian, which is a condition for hypoellipticity known from
the theory of PDE's. We show that for Gaussian quantum channels this condition
leads to a delay in the onset of decoherence and can as well be used to detect
decoherence free subsystems.

We study shortcuts to adiabaticity (STA) through counterdiabatic driving in quantum critical systems.
We evaluate unitary as well as non-unitary controls, such that the system density matrix follows a prescribed trajectory.
We expect the counterdiabatic protocol studied here can be of fundamental importance for understanding STA in many-body open quantum systems.

Quantum property preservation (QPP) is the problem of maintaining a target property of a quantum system for as long as possible.
Here, we develop a general theory to formalize and analyze QPP.
We characterize properties encoded as scalar functions of the system state that can be preserved time-locally via continuous control using smoothly varying control Hamiltonians.

We analyse the problem of estimating a scalar parameter $g$ that controls the Hamiltonian of a quantum system subject to Markovian noise.
We place bounds on the growth rate of the quantum Fisher information with respect to $g$, in terms of the Lindblad operators and the $g$-derivative of the Hamiltonian $H$.
We demonstrate that the sensitivity is related to the quantum fluctuations of $partial H/partial g$, illustrating how 'non-classical' states can enhance the range of signals that a system is sensitive to.
