- Abstract: We investigate atomic chains with different spatial configurations coupled to a ring cavity comprising two counterpropagating traveling modes. We describe the collective atom-light scattering effect with a structure factor of the atomic chain and demonstrate that the interactions between the atoms and the cavity are controlled by the structure factor, resulting in distinctly different collective excitation modes and energy spectrum than for Fabry-P\'erot cavities. Remarkably, we observe that a cavity dark mode emerges when the atomic spacings are integer multiples of the half-wavelength. The nodes of this standing-wave dark mode align precisely with the atomic positions, enabling intracavity field conversion without free-space scattering. By adjusting the configuration of the atomic chain, we realize tunable photon routing and a large optical phase shift with almost no photon loss, which can be used to implement versatile building blocks for optical quantum engineering.

We observe a cavity dark mode, where the standing-wave nodes are dynamically locked to the positions of the atoms.
The dark mode is decoupled from the atoms, protecting the system from dissipation through atomic scattering.
We impart an arbitrary large phase shift on the converted optical fields by translating the atom array.

We calculate the excitation spectrum of a single-electron atom localized near a dielectric nanostructure.
In particular, the strong resonance interaction between atom(s) and light, propagating through a photonic crystal waveguide, justifies as realistic the scenario of a signal light coupling with a small atomic array consisting of a few atoms.
As a potential implication, the directional one-dimensional resonance scattering, expected in such systems, could provide a quantum bus by entangling distant atoms integrated into a quantum register.

We consider an ensemble of Alkali atoms that are continuously optically pumped and probed.
Due to the collective scattering of photons at large optical depth, the steady state of atoms does not correspond to an uncorrelated tensor-product state.
We find and characterize regimes of Raman lasing, akin to the model of a superradiant laser.

Subradiant excitations propagate through the atomic array with very long lifetimes.
We demonstrate that one can harness these excitations to obtain tunable directional emission patterns.
