- Title: Uncovering communities of pipelines in the task-fMRI analytical space
- Authors: Elodie Germani, Elisa Fromont, Camille Maumet,
- Abstract summary: We show that there are subsets of pipelines that give similar results, especially those sharing specific parameters.
Those pipeline-to-pipeline patterns are stable across groups of participants but not across different tasks.
By visualizing the differences between communities, we show that the pipeline space is mainly driven by the size of the activation area in the brain.

- Abstract: Analytical workflows in functional magnetic resonance imaging are highly flexible with limited best practices as to how to choose a pipeline. While it has been shown that the use of different pipelines might lead to different results, there is still a lack of understanding of the factors that drive these differences and of the stability of these differences across contexts. We use community detection algorithms to explore the pipeline space and assess the stability of pipeline relationships across different contexts. We show that there are subsets of pipelines that give similar results, especially those sharing specific parameters (e.g. number of motion regressors, software packages, etc.). Those pipeline-to-pipeline patterns are stable across groups of participants but not across different tasks. By visualizing the differences between communities, we show that the pipeline space is mainly driven by the size of the activation area in the brain and the scale of statistic values in statistic maps.

Current channel-independent (CI) models and models with a CI final projection layer are unable to capture correlations.
We present the variate embedding (VE) pipeline, which learns a unique and consistent embedding for each variate.
The VE pipeline can be integrated into any model with a CI final projection layer to improve multivariate forecasting.

A set-covering greedy algorithm is used to select representative pipelines minimizing the maximum regret between the representative and the pipelines within the set.
Our analysis also shows that parameters as denoising, sharpening, and downsampling are very important to foster diversity.

This paper proposes a parameter-free multimodal fusion framework that dynamically exchanges channels between sub-networks of different modalities.
The validity of such exchanging process is also guaranteed by sharing convolutional filters yet keeping separate BN layers across modalities, which, as an add-on benefit, allows our multimodal architecture to be almost as compact as a unimodal network.

Learning [95.90009829265297]
Underspecification is common in modern ML pipelines, such as those based on deep learning.
We show here that such predictors can behave very differently in deployment domains.
This ambiguity can lead to instability and poor model behavior in practice.
