- Abstract: The Casimir effect is a macroscopic evidence of the quantum nature of the vacuum. On a ring, it leads to a finite size correction to the vacuum energy. In this work, we show that this vacuum's energy and pressure acquire additional, sizable corrections, when the ring's radius is increased fast enough, an experimentally accessible model of an expanding universe. This effect is distinct from the dynamical Casimir effect: it is a manifestation of the conformal anomaly, originating from the spacetime curvature induced by the increase of the ring's radius. This anomalous dynamical Casimir effect is measurable through the work necessary to increase the ring size, which becomes non-monotonous in time.

The Casimir effect describes the attractive force arising due to quantum fluctuations of the vacuum electromagnetic field between closely spaced plates.
Traditionally, zeta-regularization is employed in calculations to address infinities that emerge during the derivation.
This paper presents a novel derivation of the Casimir effect that circumvents the need for zeta-regularization.

We study the backreaction effects of quantum field processes in Dynamical Casimir effect (DCE) and cosmological particle creation (CPC)
We find that for 1+1D, the only quantum field effect due to the trace anomaly tends to accelerate the contraction of the ring over and above that due to the attractive force in the static Casimir effect.
Our findings comply with what is known as the quantum Lenz law, found in cosmological backreaction problems.

Casimir forces, related to London-van der Waals forces, arise if the spectrum of electromagnetic fluctuations is restricted by boundaries.
We experimentally investigate the influence of self-assembled molecular bio and organic thin films on the Casimir force between a plate and a sphere.
We find that molecular thin films, despite being a mere few nanometers thick, reduce the Casimir force by up to 14%.

We extend previous results on the quantum vacuum or Casimir energy, for a non-interacting rotating system and for an interacting non-rotating system.
We consider the simultaneous effect of rotation and interactions, including an explicit breaking of rotational symmetry.
Our work shows that the simultaneous inclusion of rotation and interactions produces nontrivial changes in the quantum vacuum energy.

The entanglement harvesting protocol is an operational way to probe vacuum entanglement.
Using this protocol, it is demonstrated that while the transition probability of an individual atom is unaffected by the presence of a gravitational wave, the entanglement harvested by two atoms depends sensitively on the frequency of the gravitational wave.
This suggests that the entanglement signature left by a gravitational wave may be useful in characterizing its properties, and potentially useful in exploring the gravitational-wave memory effect and gravitational-wave induced decoherence.
