- Abstract: Research on the emergence of thermodynamics in closed quantum systems under unitary time evolution arrived at the consensus that generic systems equilibrate under rather general assumptions. A new focus of the field is thus on exceptions. Persistent oscillations are one possible hallmark of non-ergodic time evolution. While time-crystalline behavior results from, e.g., many-body localization, here we show that ever-revolving solitary waves emerge in flatband Heisenberg quantum spin systems. This phenomenon is rather general for a variety of frustrated spin systems in one, two, and three dimensions as well as for Hubbard systems.

We experimentally investigate the subsystem Loschmidt echo, a quasi-local observable that captures key features of the Loschmidt echo.
In the short-time regime, we observe a dynamical quantum phase transition arising from genuine higher-order correlations.
In the long-time regime, the subsystem Loschmidt echo allows us to quantitatively determine the effective dimension and structure of the accessible Hilbert space in the thermodynamic limit.

Recently a quantum notion of ergodicity has been proposed, namely that isolated, global quantum states uniformly explore their available state space.
Here we observe signatures of this process with an experimental Rydberg quantum simulator and various numerical models.
We then consider the case of an open system interacting noisily with an external environment.

Isolated interacting quantum systems generally thermalize, yet there are several counterexamples for the breakdown of ergodicity.
Recently, ergodicity breaking has been observed in systems subjected to linear potentials, termed Stark many-body localization.
Here, we experimentally explore initial-state dependent dynamics using a ladder-type superconducting processor with up to 24 qubits.
