- Abstract: We explore the process of orbital angular momentum (OAM) transfer from a twisted light beam to an electron in atomic ionization within the first Born approximation. The characteristics of the ejected electron are studied regardless of the detection scheme. We find that the outgoing electron possesses a definite projection of OAM when a single atom is located on the propagation axis of the photon, whereas the size of the electron wave packet is solely determined by the energy of the photon rather than by its transverse coherence length. Shifting the position of the atom yields a finite dispersion of the electron OAM. We also study a more experimentally feasible scenario -- a localized finite-sized atomic target -- and develop representative approaches to describing coherent and incoherent regimes of photoionization.

We show that in the inelastic collision of a photon and an atom, the twisted state of the photon is transferred to the center-of-mass state.
We also show that, depending on the experimental conditions, the twistedness of the photon is either transferred to the atomic center-of-mass quantum state or modifies the selection rule for the bound electron transition.

nanostructure [0.0]
We calculate the excitation spectrum of a single-electron atom localized near a dielectric nanostructure.
In particular, the strong resonance interaction between atom(s) and light, propagating through a photonic crystal waveguide, justifies as realistic the scenario of a signal light coupling with a small atomic array consisting of a few atoms.
As a potential implication, the directional one-dimensional resonance scattering, expected in such systems, could provide a quantum bus by entangling distant atoms integrated into a quantum register.

Quantum coherence between electronic states of a photoionized molecule and the resulting process of ultrafast electron-hole migration has been put forward as a possible quantum mechanism of charge-directed reactivity governing the photoionization-induced molecular decomposition.
Here, we use x-rays both to create and to directly probe quantum coherence in the photoionized amino acid glycine.
Delayed x-ray pulses track the induced coherence through resonant x-ray absorption that induces Auger decay and by the photoelectron emission from sequential double photoionization.
