- Abstract: We employ linearized quantum gravity to show that gravitational redshift occurs as a purely quantum process. To achieve our goal we study the interaction between propagating photonic wave-packets and gravitons. Crucially, the redshift occurs as predicted by general relativity but arises in flat spacetime in the absence of curvature. In particular, redshift as a classical gravitational effect can be understood as a mean-field process where an effective interaction occurs between the photon and gravitons in an effective highly-populated coherent state. These results can help improve our understanding of the quantum nature of gravity in the low energy and low curvature regime.

We analyze the domain of validity of a quantum optical model describing the effects of gravitational redshift on the quantum state of photons that propagate in curved spacetime.
We find that the model is consistent for small redshift, but fails for larger redshifts.

Twisted photons carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are competent candidates for future interstellar communications.
It is seen that the OAM cannot remain conserved in the presence of gravitational fluctuations.
It is revealed that the higher-dimensional OAM entanglement is more susceptible to spacetime fluctuations.

The entanglement harvesting protocol is an operational way to probe vacuum entanglement.
Using this protocol, it is demonstrated that while the transition probability of an individual atom is unaffected by the presence of a gravitational wave, the entanglement harvested by two atoms depends sensitively on the frequency of the gravitational wave.
This suggests that the entanglement signature left by a gravitational wave may be useful in characterizing its properties, and potentially useful in exploring the gravitational-wave memory effect and gravitational-wave induced decoherence.
