- Abstract: We present a straightforward yet comprehensive theoretical study of different quantum states emerging from a bi-modal beamsplitter when various input states interfere. Specifically, we analyze the output states for different combinations of input fields, including Fock states $|n\rangle|m\rangle$, hybrid states $|n\rangle|\alpha\rangle$, and coherent states $|\alpha\rangle|\beta\rangle$. We derive explicit expressions for the output state vectors, calculate the mean photon number, photon number variance, Mandel Q parameter, and secondorder coherence function to characterize the statistical properties of the output fields. Our results are intended as a pedagogical resource, serving as an introductory reference for students and researchers aiming to understand basic photon statistics using beamsplitters.

What properties of a multi-mode Gaussian state are determined by the signal from one detector that measures total number photons up to some bound?
We find that if the Gaussian state occupies $S$ modes and the probabilities of $n$ photons for all $nleq 8S$ are known, then we can determine the spectrum of the Gaussian covariance matrix.
Nothing more can be learned, even if all photon-number probabilities are known.

multiphotonic interference and asymptotic classical correspondence [44.99833362998488]
We present the analysis of the quantum two-port interferometer in the $n rightarrow infty$ limit of $n$ partially indistinguishable photons.
Our main result is that the output distribution is dominated by the $O(sqrtn)$ channels around a certain $j*$ that depends on the degree of indistinguishability.
The form is essentially the doubly-humped semi-classical envelope of the distribution that would arise from $2 j*$ indistinguishable photons, and which reproduces the corresponding classical intensity distribution.

A beam-splitter has certain (complex-valued) probability amplitudes for sending an incoming photon into one of two possible directions.
We use elementary laws of classical and quantum optics to obtain general relations among the magnitudes and phases of these probability amplitudes.
A simple application of the Feynman method provides a form of justification for the Bose enhancement implicit in the well-known formulas.
