- Abstract: The accelerating pace of scientific publishing makes it increasingly difficult for researchers to stay current. We present Paper Espresso, an open-source platform that automatically discovers, summarizes, and analyzes trending arXiv papers. The system uses large language models (LLMs) to generate structured summaries with topical labels and keywords, and provides multi-granularity trend analysis at daily, weekly, and monthly scales through LLM-driven topic consolidation. Over 35 months of continuous deployment, Paper Espresso has processed over 13,300 papers and publicly released all structured metadata, revealing rich dynamics in the AI research landscape: a mid-2025 surge in reinforcement learning for LLM reasoning, non-saturating topic emergence (6,673 unique topics), and a positive correlation between topic novelty and community engagement (2.0x median upvotes for the most novel papers). Generative large language models (LLMs) introduce a further potential disruption by altering how manuscripts are written.<n>This paper addresses the gap through a large-scale analysis of more than 2.1 million preprints spanning 2016--2025 (115 months) across four major repositories.<n>Our findings reveal that LLMs have accelerated submission and revision cycles, modestly increased linguistic complexity, and disproportionately expanded AI-related topics.

The objective is to offer a quick guide to the most relevant and widely discussed research, aiding both newcomers and established researchers in staying abreast of current trends.
We observe the dominance of papers related to Large Language Models (LLMs) and specifically ChatGPT during the first half of 2023.
NLP related papers are the most influential (around 60% of top papers) even though there are twice as many ML related papers in our data.

Large language models (LLMs) are dramatically influencing AI research, spurring discussions on what has changed so far and how to shape the field's future.
To clarify such questions, we analyze a new dataset of 16,979 LLM-related arXiv papers, focusing on recent trends in 2023 vs. 2018-2022.
An influx of new authors -- half of all first authors in 2023 -- are entering from non-NLP fields of AI, driving disciplinary expansion.
Surprisingly, industry accounts for a smaller publication share in 2023, largely due to reduced output from Google and other Big Tech companies.
