- Abstract: We present a detailed account of the design choices required for planar Penning traps that feature a highly harmonic confining potential. High harmonicity is indispensable for a number of applications, particularly for confinement of single electrons as qubits in quantum-information processing. The present work extends previous studies [D. Goldmann and G. Gabrielse, Phys. Rev. A 81, 052335 (2010)] by a fully analytic treatment of finite electrode gaps and their relevance for small traps on the millimetre size scale and below, when relative gap sizes are non-negligible. We derive the overall trap potential with a particular focus on different models of finite-gap potentials and show how to find the optimum trap geometry and electrode voltages to minimize anharmonicities. The analytic calculations are compared with detailed finite-element simulations.

Neural wave functions accomplished unprecedented accuracies in approximating the ground state of many-electron systems, though at a high computational cost.
Recent works proposed amortizing the cost by learning generalized wave functions across different structures and compounds instead of solving each problem independently.
This work tackles the problem by defining overparametrized, fully learnable neural wave functions suitable for generalization across molecules.

Trapped-ion quantum information processing may benefit from qubits encoded in isotopes that are practically available in only small quantities.
Laser ablation provides a method of controllably liberating neutral atoms or ions from low-volume targets.
Here we investigate ablation-based ion loading into surface-electrode traps of different sizes to test a model describing ion loading probability.

We analytically describe the RF-potential of a realistic octupole trap by including lower order terms to the well-established equation for a perfectly symmetric octupole trap.
A complete equation is proposed for a trap with any electrode deviation relying on a combination of the simple cases where the defects are taken individually.
An independent fine-tuning of the amplitude of the RF voltage applied on each electrode can be used to mitigate the geometrical defects of a realistic trap.
