- Abstract: As a universal theory of physics, quantum mechanics must assign states to
every level of description of a system -- from a full microscopic description,
all the way up to an effective macroscopic characterization -- and also to
describe the interconnections among them. Assuming that we only have a
coarse-grained access to a physical system, here we show how to assign to it a
microscopic description that abides by all macroscopic constraints. In order to
do that, we employ general coarse-graining maps, allowing our approach to be
used even when the split between system and environment is not obvious. As a
by-product, we show how effective nonlinear dynamics can emerge from the linear
quantum evolution, and we readily apply it to a state discrimination task.

We construct an inverse map that assigns a microscopic state to a coarse-grained state based on the maximum entropy principle.
We investigate two-qubit systems, with swap and controlled-not gates, and $n$-qubit systems, configured either in an Ising spin chain or with all-to-all interactions.
We find that these dynamics exhibit atypical quantum behavior, such as non-linearity and non-Markovianity.

We report a phenomenon occurring in open quantum systems by which virtual states can acquire a sizable population in the long time limit.
This means that the situation where the virtual state remains unpopulated can be metastable.
We show how these results can be relevant for practical questions such as the generation of stable and metastable entangled states in dissipative systems of interacting qubits.

To encode quantum information in the dark states, they need to span a space with a dimensionality larger than one, so different states act as a computational basis.
This approach offers new possibilities for storing, protecting and manipulating quantum information in open systems.
