- Abstract: Here we introduce the concept of the twinning field -- a driving
electromagnetic pulse that induces an identical optical response from two
distinct materials. We show that for pairs of generic many-body systems, a
twinning field which renders the systems \emph{optically indistinguishable}
always exists. The conditions under which this field is unique are derived, and
this analysis is supplemented by numerical calculations of twinning fields for
the Fermi-Hubbard model. The universal existence of twinning fields may lead to
new research directions in non-linear optics, materials science, and quantum
technologies.

In quantum optics it is usual to describe the basic energy quanta of the electromagnetic (EM) field, photons, in terms of monochromatic waves.
We take an alternative approach and quantise the free EM field in both one and three dimensions in terms of quanta that are perfectly localised.
Here we show that, unlike standard quantisation schemes, our approach predicts the causal propagation of localised photonic wave packets.

We introduce a single-photon detector design operating in the microwave domain based on a weakly nonlinear metamaterial.
We show that the single-photon detection fidelity increases with the length of the metamaterial to approach one at experimentally realistic lengths.
In stark contrast to conventional photon detectors operating in the optical domain, the photon is not destroyed by the detection and the photon wavepacket is minimally disturbed.
