- Abstract: Since the achievement of quantum degeneracy in gases of chromium atoms in
2004, the experimental investigation of ultracold gases made of highly magnetic
atoms has blossomed. The field has yielded the observation of many
unprecedented phenomena, in particular those in which long-range and
anisotropic dipole-dipole interactions play a crucial role. In this review, we
aim to present the aspects of the magnetic quantum-gas platform that make it
unique for exploring ultracold and quantum physics as well as to give a
thorough overview of experimental achievements.

Quantum degeneracy is the central many-body feature of ideal quantum gases stemming from quantum mechanics.
We show that spin-1/2 ideal Bose gases do not possess entanglement which can be revealed from entanglement criteria.
Ideal spin-1/2 Fermi gases exhibit spin entanglement revealed by the collective-spin variances upon entering quantum degeneracy.

We take advantage of the clean setting of homogeneous quantum gases and fast radio-frequency control to manipulate Fermi polarons.
We measure the decay rate and the quasiparticle residue of the driven polaron from the Rabi oscillations between the two internal states.

Magnetic field effects (MFE) in certain chemical reactions have been well established in the last five decades.
We employ elaborate and realistic models of radical-pairs, considering its coupling to the local spin environment and the sensor.
For two model systems, we derive signals of MFE detectable even in the weak coupling regime between radical-pair and NV quantum sensor.

Laughlin envisioned a thought experiment that laid the groundwork for our understanding of topological quantum matter.
His proposal is based on a quantum Hall cylinder periodically driven by an axial magnetic field, resulting in the quantized motion of electrons.
We realize this milestone experiment with an ultracold gas of dysprosium atoms, the cyclic dimension being encoded in the electronic spin and the axial field controlled by the phases of laser-induced spin-orbit couplings.
