- Abstract summary: We investigate an attractive force caused by light induced dipole-dipole interactions in freely expanding ultracold 87Rb atoms.
This collective, light-triggered effect results in a self-confining potential with interesting features.
The experimental data are discussed in the framework of a theoretical model based on a local-field approach for the light scattered by the atomic cloud.

- Abstract: We investigate an attractive force caused by light induced dipole-dipole
interactions in freely expanding ultracold 87Rb atoms. This collective,
light-triggered effect results in a self-confining potential with interesting
features: it exhibits nonlocal properties, is attractive for both red and
blue-detuned light fields and induces a remarkably strong force that depends on
the gradient of the atomic density. The experimental data are discussed in the
framework of a theoretical model based on a local-field approach for the light
scattered by the atomic cloud.

Spontaneous emission is a fundamental out-of-equilibrium process in which an excited quantum emitter relaxes to the ground state due to quantum fluctuations.
One way to modify these photon-mediated interactions is to alter the dipole radiation patterns of the emitter, e.g., by placing photonic crystals near them.
Our study delves into the interaction between these directional emission patterns and the aforementioned variables, revealing the untapped potential to fine-tune collective quantum optical phenomena.

Quasiparticles are emergent excitations of matter that underlie much of our understanding of quantum many-body systems.
We take advantage of the clean setting of homogeneous quantum gases and fast radio-frequency control to manipulate Fermi polarons.
We measure the decay rate and the quasiparticle residue of the driven polaron from the Rabi oscillations between the two internal states.

Results extend to a more realistic model, where the would-be electron was described by a scalar variable, coupled to an (also scalar) vacuum field.
