- Abstract: Satyendra Nath Bose is one of the great Indian scientists. His remarkable
work on the black body radiation or derivation of Planck's law led to quantum
statistics, in particular, the statistics of photon. Albert Einstein applied
Bose's idea to a gas made of atoms and predicted a new state of matter now
called Bose-Einstein condensate. It took 70 years to observe the predicted
condensation phenomenon in the laboratory. With a brief introduction to the
formative period of Professor Bose, this research survey begins with the
founding works on quantum statistics and, subsequently, provides a brief
account of the series of events terminating in the experimental realization of
Bose-Einstein condensation. We also provide two simple examples to visualize
the role of synthetic spin-orbit coupling in a quasi-one-dimensional condensate
with attractive atom-atom interaction.

Some of the most astonishing and prominent properties of Quantum Mechanics, such as entanglement and Bell nonlocality, have only been studied extensively in dedicated low-energy laboratory setups.
The feasibility of these studies in the high-energy regime explored by particle colliders was only recently shown, and has gathered the attention of the scientific community.

Einstein discussed a gedanken experiment involving a single photon diffracted at an aperture and impinging on a screen.
He devised the example to support De Broglie's hypothesis of the pilot wave, and his own ideas on the incompleteness of the description of physical reality provided by Quantum Mechanics.
Partial realizations of Einstein's example have been performed, but the complete experiment has not been attempted (for good practical reasons) yet.

Ring polymer self-consistent field theory is used to calculate the critical temperatures and heat capacities of an ideal Bose gas.
A transition indicative of Bose-Einstein condensation is observed as expected.
It is shown that quantum phenomena, such as Bose-Einstein condensation, boson exchange, entanglement and contextuality, can be visualized in terms of merging and separating ring polymer threads in thermal-space.

The paradox of Bose-Einstein condensation is that phenomena such as the $lambda$-transition heat capacity and superfluid flow are macroscopic, whereas the occupancy of the ground state is microscopic.
This contradiction is resolved with a simple derivation for ideal bosons that shows Bose-Einstein condensation is into multiple low-lying states, not just the ground state.

As we approach the centenary of the discovery of quantum statistics in 1924, it is important to revisit Bose's original derivation of Planck's law.
It introduced not only the novel concept of the indistinguishability of photons but also of their intrinsic spin, a fact unknown to most physicists.

Einstein, Podolsky and Rosen (EPR) conceived a Gedankenexperiment which became a cornerstone of quantum technology and still challenges our understanding of reality and locality today.
We observe the EPR paradox in an experiment with two spatially separated Bose-Einstein condensates containing about 700 Rubidium atoms each.
Our results show that the conflict between quantum mechanics and local realism does not disappear as the system size is increased to over a thousand massive particles.
