- Title: The Story of Bose, Photon Spin and Indistinguishability
- Authors: Partha Ghose
- Abstract summary: As we approach the centenary of the discovery of quantum statistics in 1924, it is important to revisit Bose's original derivation of Planck's law.
It introduced not only the novel concept of the indistinguishability of photons but also of their intrinsic spin, a fact unknown to most physicists.

- Abstract: As we approach the centenary of the discovery of quantum statistics in 1924,
it is important to revisit Bose's original derivation of Planck's law usually
ignored in most standard presentations of Bose-Einstein statistics. It
introduced not only the novel concept of the indistinguishability of photons
but also of their intrinsic spin, a fact unknown to most physicists.

We will deal with early appearances of the concept of indistinguishable particles within the frame of quantum mechanics.
We will discuss to what extent Heisenberg's approach leads to a purely statistical interpretation of this concept.
Although the indistinguishability of the electrons and indeterminacy are common explanations for the blurring of electron orbits, we argue that such an image is an oversimplification.

In 1924, Einstein received a short manuscript in the mail from the Indian physicist S.N. Bose.
He quickly translated Bose's manuscript to German and submitted it to Zeitschrift f"ur Physik.
This paper describes some of the fascinating issues that Einstein struggled with as he attempted to unify the quantum-statistical properties of matter with those of the electromagnetic field.

This paper explores the historical development of the theory of quantum mechanics between 1900 and 1927.
We follow the emergence of Einstein's light quanta hypothesis, Bohr's atomic model, and the statistical implications of indistinguishable particles.
Special emphasis is placed on the transition from the Old Quantum Theory to modern quantum mechanics.

Einstein discussed a gedanken experiment involving a single photon diffracted at an aperture and impinging on a screen.
He devised the example to support De Broglie's hypothesis of the pilot wave, and his own ideas on the incompleteness of the description of physical reality provided by Quantum Mechanics.
Partial realizations of Einstein's example have been performed, but the complete experiment has not been attempted (for good practical reasons) yet.

Satyendra Nath Bose is one of the great Indian scientists.
His work on the black body radiation or derivation of Planck's law led to quantum statistics.
Albert Einstein applied Bose's idea to a gas made of atoms and predicted a new state of matter now called Bose-Einstein condensate.

The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) paradox that argues for the incompleteness of quantum mechanics as a description of physical reality has been put to rest by John Bell's famous theorem.
We discuss several variants of the Bell inequalities and explore the ways in which they demolish the arguments in favor of local hidden-variable theories.
We also examine the roots of Feynman's attitude toward Bell's theorem in the context of Feynman's special perspective on quantum mechanics.
