- Title: Pauli's Electron in Ehrenfest and Bohm Theories, a Comparative Study
- Authors: Asher Yahalom
- Abstract summary: Electrons moving at slow speeds are described by a wave function which is a solution of Pauli's equation.
A less orthodox approach is championed by Bohm, and attributes a velocity field to the electron also derived from the Pauli wave function.
It is thus interesting to compare the trajectory followed by the electron according to Bohm and its expectation value according to Ehrenfest.

- Abstract: Electrons moving at slow speeds much lower that the speed of light are
described by a wave function which is a solution of Pauli's equation. This is a
low velocity limit of the relativistic Dirac equation. Here we compare two
approaches, one which is the more conservative Copenhagen's interpretation
denying a trajectory of the electron but allowing a trajectory to the electron
expectation value through Ehrenfest theorem. The said expectation value is of
course calculated using a solution of Pauli's equation. A less orthodox
approach is championed by Bohm, and attributes a velocity field to the electron
also derived from the Pauli wave function. It is thus interesting to compare
the trajectory followed by the electron according to Bohm and its expectation
value according to Ehrenfest. Both similarities and differences will be
considered.

Bohr magneton is a simple estimate of the electron's spin magnetic moment that can be derived from the Dirac equation.
These derivations ignore two effects that are central to quantum field theoretic calculations of the electron's magnetic moment: self-interaction and mass renormalization.
Those two effects can and should be incorporated when analyzing the Dirac equation, to better isolate the distinctive improvements of quantum field theory.

We present a new interpretation of quantum mechanics, called the double-scale theory.
It is based on the simultaneous existence of two wave functions in the laboratory reference frame.
The external wave function corresponds to a field that pilots the center-of-mass of the quantum system.
The internal wave function corresponds to the interpretation proposed by Edwin Schr"odinger.

The principle is to decompose the evolution of a quantum system into two wave functions.
For Schr"odinger, the particles are extended and the square of the module of the (internal) wave function of an electron corresponds to the density of its charge in space.
