- Abstract summary: We find that non-Hermiticity gives rise to abrupt and prominent kinks in the semi-classical wave packet trajectories of quantum gases.
This physically stems from a hitherto underappreciated intrinsic non-locality from non-Hermitian pumping.

- Abstract: It is well known that non-Hermitian, non-reciprocal systems may harbor exponentially localized skin modes. However, in this work, we find that, generically, non-Hermiticity gives rise to abrupt and prominent kinks in the semi-classical wave packet trajectories of quantum gases, despite the absence of sudden physical impulses. This physically stems from a hitherto underappreciated intrinsic non-locality from non-Hermitian pumping, even if all physical couplings are local, thereby resulting in enigmatic singularities in the band structure that lead to discontinuous band geometry and Berry curvature. Specifically, we focus on the realization of the kinked response in an ultracold atomic setup. For a concrete experimental demonstration, we propose an ultracold atomic setup in a two-dimensional optical lattice with laser-induced loss such that response kinks can be observed without fine-tuning in the physical atomic cloud dynamics. Our results showcase unique non-monotonic behavior from non-Hermitian pumping beyond the non-Hermitian skin effect and suggest new avenues for investigating non-Hermitian dynamics on ultracold atomic platforms.

We study Thouless pumps, i.e., adiabatic topological transport, in an interacting spin chain described by the dimerized XXZ Hamiltonian.
In the noninteracting case, quantized Thouless pumps can only occur when a topological singularity is encircled adiabatically.
In the presence of interactions, such topological transport can even persist for exotic paths in which the system gets arbitrarily close to the singularity.

We experimentally observe the parity symmetry breaking of an ancillary Xmon artificial atom induced by the field of a lumped-element superconducting resonator.

Non-Hermitian systems have recently attracted broad interest and exhibited intriguing physical phenomena.
Here we propose a non-Hermitian atom-waveguide system composed of a tilted one-dimensional atomic array.
We find the excitation of the collective atomic states concentrates in the middle interface, pointing towards the non-Hermitian skin effect.

We predict quantum non-Hermitian phenomena: the fractional quantum Zeno (FQZ) effect and FQZ-induced photon antibunching.
We find FQZ-induced strong photon antibunching in the steady state of a driven emitter even for weak nonlinearities.
Remarkably, we identify that the sub-Poissonian quantum statistics of photons, which has no classical analogs, stems here from the key role of non-Hermiticity.

We report on an emergent mechanism for pumping in a quantum gas coupled to an optical resonator.
Due to dissipation, the cavity field evolves between its two quadratures, each corresponding to a different centrosymmetric crystal configuration.
This self-oscillation results in a time-periodic potential analogous to that describing the transport of electrons in topological tight-binding models.
