- Abstract: Experiments have recently been proposed testing whether quantum gravitational
interactions generate entanglement between adjacent masses in position
superposition states. We propose potentially less challenging experiments that
test quantum gravity against theories with classical space-times defined by
postulating semi-classical gravity (or classical effects of similar scale) for
mesoscopic systems.

A consistent theory describing the dynamics of quantum systems interacting on a classical space-time was recently put forward by Oppenheimn et al.
Here, we report existing experimental upper bounds on such space-time diffusion based on a review of several types of experiments with very low force noise.
We find an upper bound at least 15 orders of magnitude lower as compared to the initial bounds for explicit models presented by Oppenheimn et al.

Both techniques can drive discovery in the next decade of fundamental physics research in microgravity.

There is still no experimental evidence of any non-classical features of gravity.

In non-relativistic quantum mechanics, the gravitational field in such experiments can be written as a superposition state.
We empirically demonstrate that alternative theories of gravity can avoid gravitational superposition states.
Proposed experiments with superposed gravitational sources would provide even stronger evidence that gravity is nonclassical.

We consider two interacting systems when one is treated classically while the other system remains quantum.
We prove that such hybrid dynamics necessarily results in decoherence of the quantum system, and a breakdown in predictability in the classical phase space.
Applying the trade-off relation to gravity, we find a relationship between the strength of gravitationally-induced decoherence versus diffusion of the metric and its conjugate momenta.
