- Title: Linking OpenStreetMap with Knowledge Graphs -- Link Discovery for
Schema-Agnostic Volunteered Geographic Information
- Authors: Nicolas Tempelmeier, Elena Demidova
- Abstract summary: We propose OSM2KG - a novel link discovery approach to predict identity links between OSM nodes and geographic entities in a knowledge graph.
The core of the OSM2KG approach is a novel latent, compact representation of OSM nodes that captures semantic node similarity in an embedding.
Our experiments conducted on several OSM datasets, as well as the Wikidata and DBpedia knowledge graphs, demonstrate that OSM2KG can reliably discover identity links.

- Abstract: Representations of geographic entities captured in popular knowledge graphs
such as Wikidata and DBpedia are often incomplete. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a
rich source of openly available, volunteered geographic information that has a
high potential to complement these representations. However, identity links
between the knowledge graph entities and OSM nodes are still rare. The problem
of link discovery in these settings is particularly challenging due to the lack
of a strict schema and heterogeneity of the user-defined node representations
in OSM. In this article, we propose OSM2KG - a novel link discovery approach to
predict identity links between OSM nodes and geographic entities in a knowledge
graph. The core of the OSM2KG approach is a novel latent, compact
representation of OSM nodes that captures semantic node similarity in an
embedding. OSM2KG adopts this latent representation to train a supervised model
for link prediction and utilises existing links between OSM and knowledge
graphs for training. Our experiments conducted on several OSM datasets, as well
as the Wikidata and DBpedia knowledge graphs, demonstrate that OSM2KG can
reliably discover identity links. OSM2KG achieves an F1 score of 92.05% on
Wikidata and of 94.17% on DBpedia on average, which corresponds to a 21.82
percentage points increase in F1 score on Wikidata compared to the best
performing baselines.

We propose to use the local similarity (LocalSim) to learn node-level weighted fusion, which can also serve as a plug-and-play module.
For better fusion, we propose a novel and efficient Initial Residual Difference Connection (IRDC) to extract more informative multi-hop information.
Our proposed method, namely Local Similarity Graph Neural Network (LSGNN), can offer comparable or superior state-of-the-art performance on both homophilic and heterophilic graphs.

Geographic web sources such as OpenStreetMap (OSM) and knowledge graphs such as Wikidata are often unconnected.
An example connection can be established between these sources are links between streets in OSM to the persons in Wikidata they were named after.
This paper presents StreetToPerson, an approach for connecting streets in OSM to persons in a knowledge graph based on relations in the knowledge graph and spatial dependencies.

We propose a pseudometric for attributed graphs, the Tree Mover's Distance (TMD), and study its relation to generalization.
First, we show that TMD captures properties relevant to graph classification; a simple TMD-SVM performs competitively with standard GNNs.
Second, we relate TMD to generalization of GNNs under distribution shifts, and show that it correlates well with performance drop under such shifts.

This paper proposes a novel Structure-Aware Heterogeneous Graph Neural Network (SHGNN) to address the above limitations.
We first utilize a feature propagation module to capture the local structure information of intermediate nodes in the meta-path.
Next, we use a tree-attention aggregator to incorporate the graph structure information into the aggregation module on the meta-path.
Finally, we leverage a meta-path aggregator to fuse the information aggregated from different meta-paths.

We show that the proposed self-supervision both outperforms and improves competing methods by 1% and up to 10% for all tasks.
